Top 100 video games

The fine folks over at Next Generation have compiled what they are calling The Top 100 Games of the 21st Century.

This only means one thing...Tecmo Super Bowl is NOT on the list. Good thing too, because any list that doesn't have Tecmo Super Bowl and RBI Baseball as its top two is not a list worthy of our time. Also as an aside, since it's just 2006, isn't it a bit early for any Best of anything for this century? Oh well.

So let's review where they put some of our faves (all sports-themed, of course).

#99 - NFL Fever 2002 (2001) [Microsoft | Revenues: $26 million]
#94 - NBA Ballers (2004) [Midway | Revenues: $23 million]
#88 - MX Unleashed (2004) [THQ/Rainbow | Revenues: $22 million]
#83 - SSX 3 (2003) [EA | Revenues: $28 million]

#58 - NFL Street (2004) [EA/Tiburon | Revenues: $37 million]
#57 - ESPN NBA 2K5 (2004) [Sega/Visual Concepts | Revenues: $20 million]
#55 - MVP Baseball 2005 (2004) [EA | Revenues: $29 million]
#51 - Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004 (2003) [EA | Revenues: $43 million]
#44 - WWE: Shut Your Mouth (2002) [THQ/Yuke's Media | Revenues: $50 million]

#23 - ESPN NFL 2K5 (2004) [Sega/Visual Concepts | Revenues: $33 million]
#20 - ATV Off-Road Fury(2001) [SCEA/Rainbow | Revenues: $49 million]
#18 - NBA Street (2001) [EA/NuFX | Revenues: $57 million]
#14 - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 (2001) [Activision/Neversoft | Revenues: $77 million]
#6 - Need for Speed: Underground (2003) [EA | Revenues: $115 million]
#4 - Madden NFL 2004 (2003) [EA/Tiburon | Revenues: $170 million]
#3 - Gran Turismo 3:A-Spec (2001) [SCEA/Polyphony | Revenues: $120 million]

OK, so now that we have gone through the list we see that actual enjoyment of the game takes a backseat to how much money the game earned. That said, it is interesting to note that 3 of the top 6 sports games are racing and none of them are NASCAR-related. Madden is no surprise and the fact that the top baseball game is way down at #55 is also no surprise. Seems to me that the games that have the most "action" are also the most popular - go figure. Also it's no surprise that golf is on the list more than once.

So which game is your fave? Any games that you are surprised to not see on the list? Share with us.
