Sprewell investigated in sexual assault case
MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Police were questioning former NBA player Latrell Sprewell Wednesday in connection with a sexual assault allegation.

Milwaukee police spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz said Sprewell, of River Hills, voluntarily appeared at their downtown offices Wednesday with his attorneys. She declined to say if he was a suspect in the assault.

Police had a report of a second-degree sexual assault from a 21-year-old Milwaukee woman, but Schwartz wouldn't say what that involved. The assault allegedly happened on a boat at the McKinley Marina on Tuesday. more

Vikings' Dwight Smith cited for indecent conduct
MINNEAPOLIS (Star-Tribune) -- Minneapolis police cited Minnesota Vikings safety Dwight Smith and a 24-year-old Hudson woman for indecent conduct about 1:30 a.m. today in downtown.

Officers released Smith, 28, a sixth-year player signed as a free agent last month by the Vikings, and the woman at the scene at 601 1st Av. N. according to a police report about the incident.

Smith and the woman were found in a stairwell after police received a call, Lt. Thomas Rice said this morning. more

Owens chalks up tardiness to oversleeping
IRVING, Texas (AP) -- Terrell Owens overslept. That's it.

He insists he wasn't late for work Friday to send a messages to his bosses, test his boundaries or anything else his critics might think.

And, get this: He says it'll probably happen again, even if he was fined $9,500.

"I think everybody has overslept, you know, once or twice in their life," Owens said Monday, more amused than angry that a fuss is being made over something that's happened to him before, though not since he's joined the Cowboys.

"It's not a big deal," he said. "It was not something I purposely tried to do. It's something that I will try to make more of an effort, a better effort, to get here on time. Other than that, it's really not a big issue."

Jerry Jones agrees, pointing out that some of the most upstanding citizens in team history were fined for similar transgressions.

He also insisted it's a mistake to read more into Owens' tardiness, the fine and his lingering hamstring issue simply because of T.O.'s past.

"From my standpoint, it's all good," Jones said. "Apart from him not being on the field and getting repetitions, has it in any way affected relationships on this team, teammates on this team, relationships between me and Bill, me and the coaching staff, Terrell and Bill, Terrell and the coaching staff? Zero impact there."

Owens called his tardiness "very unfortunate" and apologized to his teammates. But, he added, "I've got to move on. I can't let this get me down." more

Titans' Jones charged with disorderly conduct
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee Titans cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones was arrested outside a bar early Friday and charged with disorderly conduct and public intoxication.

According to the police report, officers saw Jones arguing loudly with a woman outside a nightclub where a rap concert had been held.

Jones, 22, was described by police as slurring his speech, having bloodshot eyes and smelling strongly of alcohol.

The arrest came at 1:34 a.m. CDT, the day after the Titans broke training camp.

Jones had already been excused from Friday's team schedule for personal reasons, according to The Tennessean.

Jones was arguing with a woman he accused of stealing his wallet inside the club and passing it to one of her friends, according to police.

Officers said they ordered Jones to leave several times, but he refused and continued to shout profanities. more

Albert Belle gets 3 months in jail, probation
PHOENIX (AP) -- Former major league slugger Albert Belle was sentenced to three months in jail and five years of supervised probation Thursday for stalking his ex-girlfriend.

The 39-year-old Belle pleaded guilty in July to one felony stalking count. He had initially been arrested and charged in February, then rearrested May 17 at his Scottsdale home after he again contacted the victim. He has been jailed since the second arrest, and received credit for time served only since he entered his plea.

Superior Court Judge James Keppel warned Belle that if he contacts the victim again he will go to prison.

Belle's former girlfriend told police in January that she discovered a Global Positioning System tracking device that had fallen off her car and that Belle had threatened her. more

(NY Daily News) -- Kevan Barlow was supposed to be sleeping on Tuesday. Instead, he was comparing his former coach to one of the most despised men in history, and his new coach isn't too happy about it.

Barlow, the running back the Jets picked up in a trade with the 49ers over the weekend, compared San Francisco coach Mike Nolan to Adolf Hitler in an interview that appeared in the Contra Costa Times yesterday. The interview was conducted on Tuesday, when Barlow was given permission by Eric Mangini to catch up on his sleep instead of attending practice.

Here's what Barlow said about Nolan, who is heading into his second season as coach of the 49ers:

"Nolan just doesn't know what he's doing. He's a first-time head coach with too much power. He has too much power as a first-time head coach. He walks around with a chip on his shoulder, like he's a dictator, like he's Hitler. People are scared of him. If it ain't Nolan's way, it's the highway."

Pink Taco seeks to put name on Cards Stadium
PHOENIX (Arizona Republic) -- First, it shook up the Scottsdale establishment. Now, the family behind the Pink Taco restaurant chain is rattling the Cardinals' cage.

Would you believe Pink Taco Stadium?

That's what the Morton family, famous for creating the Hard Rock Café and Morton's Steakhouse, is saying they want to name Cardinals Stadium.

They are offering $30 million as evidence of their commitment and are promising to pursue an agreement with the Arizona Cardinals.

One problem: The Cardinals, who control the Glendale stadium's naming rights, say they want no part of the name.

Harry Morton, president and CEO of Pink Taco, said his group is prepared to use the deal for $30 million over 10 years as a starting point for negotiations. Morton said Monday that his company has the "edge and cachet" that would help elevate the team's profile with a younger demographic.

He also said he would consider calling the $455 million venue Morton Stadium, provided the Pink Taco menu was prominent throughout the venue. more

Barfield injured after son shoves him down stairs

HOUSTON (AP) -- Former All-Star outfielder Jesse Barfield was taken to a hospital Sunday after he suffered a head injury when he was shoved down a flight of stairs by his 18-year-old son, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Barfield, 46, was treated and released, but Jeremy Barfield was arrested shortly after 8 a.m., the newspaper reported.

The younger Barfield, a high school star outfielder drafted in the ninth round by the New York Mets in June, was expected to be charged with a misdemeanor, said Lt. John Martin, a spokesman for the Harris County Sheriff's Department.

"(Jeremy) and his father had some kind of argument that apparently took place on the stairs in his house," Martin told the Chronicle. "The father was lower on stairs than Jeremy was and ... at some point during argument, Jeremy shoved him and he ended up falling down the stairs and struck his head pretty hard on the floor." more

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) -- Buffalo Bills receiver Peerless Price was missing from the team's scheduled practice Sunday afternoon, two days after being held without a catch for the second consecutive preseason game.

Bills spokesperson Scott Berchtold said that Price was "absent."

Price, Buffalo's second-round pick in the 1999 draft, signed with the Bills as a free agent in April after spending three disappointing seasons with Atlanta and Dallas. He has been battling Josh Reed most of training camp for Buffalo's No. 2 receiver position behind Lee Evans.

Backman still trying to get back into baseball
(AP) -- Wally Backman has fond memories of winning the 1986 World Series with the New York Mets. His memories of his four-day stint as the manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks still sting.

Backman received a warm welcome as he joined most of his teammates from the 1986 Mets on the field at Shea Stadium for an anniversary celebration before Saturday night's game against the Rockies. He made his way through the stands along the third-base line, giving high-fives as fans cheered despite a steady rain.

Darryl Strawberry, Lenny Dykstra, Mookie Wilson and Howard Johnson got the loudest applause as they made their way through the crowd, which chanted "Lenny! Lenny!" for Dykstra and thundered "Mookie!" when Wilson was introduced.

While many of his former teammates still work in baseball, Backman is trying to get back on the field after an embarrassing episode in 2004. Arizona hired him as manager in November 2004 then dismissed him four days later because of evidence that arose from off-the-field problems, including two arrests and several financial problems.

Time has done nothing to change how the fiery Backman feels about what happened, saying Arizona handled the situation extremely poorly. more

New Zealand PG Dickel suspended 3 games for doping

HIROSHIMA, Japan (ESPN) -- New Zealand point guard Mark Dickel will miss the first three games of the world championships as part of a 10-day suspension from FIBA for failing a drug test last month.

Dickel was suspended by his national federation for two games after failing a drug test taken in July, and was included on the team's roster for the world championships on Saturday. But FIBA met Friday night and determined New Zealand's punishment wasn't enough and imposed a 10-day suspension that means he will miss New Zealand's first three games, starting with Saturday night's meeting with Spain.

The 6-foot-2 Dickel, a member of the national team since the 2000 Olympics, was suspended by Basketball New Zealand last week after testing positive for cannabis in results returned Aug. 11. Dickel, who played at UNLV from 1996-2000, missed two exhibition games against Qatar. more

Lawyer: Clarett has ties to alleged Israeli mobster

(ESPN) -- Maurice Clarett was bankrolled by an alleged member of an Israeli crime organization after leaving Ohio State, ESPN has learned, and Clarett's attorney said Thursday that his client may have been in possession of firearms last week to protect himself against mob activity.

Clarett's attorney, Nick Mango, said Thursday that Clarett has repeatedly received death threats over the past year but that a cryptic postcard sent from Los Angeles last week has him wondering about Clarett's ties to an alleged mob enforcer.

In the late summer of 2004, ESPN has learned, Clarett traveled to Los Angeles and was introduced by a rapper friend to Hai Waknine, 35, a convicted felon who prosecutors believe is a member of an Israeli crime organization called The Jerusalem Group. Waknine, who at the time was being indicted on extortion and money-laundering charges, became Clarett's sponsor and adviser, along with Waknine's attorney, David Kenner. Waknine provided Clarett with cash, a BMW, bodyguards, drivers and beachfront lodging in Malibu, with the understanding that he would be reimbursed and receive 60 percent of Clarett's rookie contract. more

Retired Pitcher Brown In Turf Battle
MACON, Ga. (Macon Telegraph) -- The grass apparently is not greener on the other side of the fence for retired Major League Baseball pitcher Kevin Brown, who reportedly pulled out a pistol in a dispute with a neighbor over yard debris.

Bibb County sheriff's deputies were called to settle a tussle about tossed turf Monday between Brown and Michael Haws.

"It was kind of an awkward evening," Haws told The Telegraph on the phone Wednesday night. "Luckily nobody got arrested and nobody got shot."

Haws said he called the sheriff's office after a loud argument that began when he found Brown throwing grass clippings over the fence into Haws' yard on Breighton Court, which backs up to Brown's multimillion-dollar estate on Brown's Ridge.

When Haws confronted Brown, the two men argued and Brown pulled out a gun and told Haws he'd better not come onto Brown's property, the report stated.

Brown, baseball's first $100 million man, told deputies that he carries a gun while strolling through the woods because he often sees snakes. more

Authorities seek arrest of ex-NBA star

MARIN, Calif. (Marin Independent) -- A Marin judge issued two arrest warrants for former NBA star Isaiah "J.R." Rider after he failed to show up for sentencing Wednesday.

Marin Superior Court Judge Verna Adams waited until after 10 a.m. to call the case, which was scheduled at 9:06 a.m.

Bail was set at $10,000 for each of the warrants in two separate misdemeanor cases against the basketball player, who retired in 2002.

Rider pleaded guilty to six misdemeanors and three infractions in the two cases in Marin. One involves false imprisonment and battery and the second is for driving with a suspended license and related charges. more

Landis' Father-in-Law Commits Suicide

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (VOA News) -- Embattled Tour de France champion Floyd Landis's father-in-law David Witt has been found dead in San Diego, California, after committing suicide in his car.

David Witt's body was discovered at a parking garage Tuesday afternoon according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's office. He had a gunshot wound to the head, and his death was ruled a suicide. more

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) -- Jose Canseco's knuckleball was uncontrollable -- and it made his debut as a starting pitcher pretty ugly.

The former American League MVP hit four batters and walked five others in 4 1-3 innings for the Long Beach Armada on Wednesday night. He also gave up a home run on a "flat knuckleball" and recorded his first career strikeout during an 8-2 loss to the Reno Silver Fox.

"Overall, it felt pretty good," said Canseco, who joined the independent Golden Baseball League earlier this year. "It took me a little while to get a rhythm out there, and I walked too many guys. It should get better." more

The NFL season is almost upon us, but in case you missed it (and I am that sure you did), the champs of football have just recently been crowned. The champs of the National Women's Football Association that is.

From their web site --

The D.C. Divas stopped the OKC Lightning from crashing down on their dreams of becoming the WORLD CHAMPIONS of women's football. The Divas lead from just moments into the first quarter and never lost their lead despite some hard playing from OKC. OKC had several huge opportunities to keep the game within striking distance but weren't able to convert on the big plays they needed. OKC's Iliana Calderon, the league's leading rusher and scorer wasn't able to get past the Divas outstanding defensive line enough to keep OKC's hopes alive. Kim Mitchell, OKC's QB scored the only OKC touchdown. The OKC Lightning's defensive line played 4 hard quarters doing all they could to stop the dominating Divas. But, the Divas were too determined and too talented to be denied. The Divas Rachelle RB Rachelle Pecovsky scored three of the Diva's touchdowns with QB Allyson Hamlin scoring the fourth TD. The final score was D.C. Divas 28 OKC Lightning 7. Congratulations to the D.C. Divas! The Divas Rachelle Pecovsky was named Most Valuable Offensive player and Ivy Tillman was named Most Valuable Defensive player.

Yes, it was written just like that. Nothing like a run-on paragraph.

Upon first glance at the web site, it should be said that using the words "large" and "women" in the same sentence for your catchphrase might not be the best of ideas as the league claims to be "The Largest Tackle Football League in the World for Women." For some reason, all I see are the words "Largest" and "Women."

But I digress.

Apparently there are 30 teams in this league spread from coast-to-coast. The league began in the year 2000 with two teams located in Tennessee and Alabama (NO WAY!). In 2002, they held what they referred to as the "SupHer Bowl." It's not immediately clear if that name has stuck or not.

In an effort to continue their legacy, apparently there is also something called "The National Girls Football Association." The NGFA is a touch football league for girls in grades 6-12 supported by the NWFA. (Is there a female version of NAMBLA?)

Amazingly, this is not the only Women's Pro Football League out there. There is the Independent Women's Football League and the Women's Professional Football League as well.

So there you go all you athletic, manly, gender-confused females out there who don't want to play pro golf, pro tennis, or shoot hoops in the WNBA. Your calling is being fulfilled.

That is the only even remotely logical explanation I can offer for this headline from ESPN:

Favre sees 'most talented' Packers team of his tenure

"I really feel like this is, as far as talent is concerned, the most talented team that I've been a part of as a whole," Favre said Monday morning.

You mean better than the Super Bowl team that had Sterling Sharpe, Dorsey Levens, Edgar Bennett, Antonio Freeman, Andre Rison, Mark Chmura, Keith Jackson, LeRoy Butler, Santana Dotson, and Reggie White?!

This year's team is even more talented, Favre insists, than the Packers' Super Bowl teams of the mid-1990s.

Guess you do. So this team that went 4-12 last year, the one you just barely could drag yourself back to despite being offered umpteen millions of dollars, is the best team you have been on?

He says this is also the most inexperienced team he has played on, and potential doesn't mean much when the pads go on.

So, it might not be the "the most talented" in other words? So you feel pretty darn good about your decision to come back then, since this team is so talented?

"This morning, I'm like, 'What am I doing?' " Favre said. "It feels like I've got glass in my shoes. But I know from experience, even though every time we practice and every time we play and every season it may get a little worse, once I get on the field, it seems to kind of go away."

So we shouldn't expect much out of you this season, despite the fact that this team is so talented?

"I don't anticipate feeling better," Favre said. "But by taking maybe mornings off and being careful to a certain extent, it will prolong my playing. I don't think it's anything that tomorrow I say, 'I just can't make it. I can't do it anymore.' It's just something you have to play with."

I see.

Favre knows outsiders aren't nearly as optimistic about the Packers.

So according to the team's QB, the Packers are really talented, but have no experience, and he feels like crap and it's only August 1. Sounds like the makings of another Super Bowl championship for the Pack!!

While partying with Lindsay Lohan and DJ AM at the karaoke bar, Nicole realized her camera was missing and demanded that the bar immediately shut down the music, turn on the lights and search everyone on the premises. The camera was never found. A source says:

They were having fun and then suddenly she's freaking out after she realises the camera's gone...Nicole had been experimenting and had a memory card full of sexy nude photos of her and a lot of friends," says a source. "They'd be embarrassed if they got out."

I'm sure the source used the word "sexy" just to be nice, because it would take Criss Angel to make looking at nude pictures of Nicole Richie even remotely tolerable. I'm positive he'd have to hypnotize me to make me think I was a necrophilliac or I was seeing a ghost. Even then he'd have to show me pictures of a car bombing or kitten on fire to make sure I didn't wake up with nightmares.

That is some DAMN FINE WRITING. I haven't laughed this hard since former Royals center fielder Kerry Robinson climbed the wall versus the White Sox to attempt to rob a Sox hitter of a double that landed 10 feet in front of the warning track this year.

In the NFL, games are either at Noon, 3:30, 7:00 or 8:00, right? So why do baseball games all start at these odd times?

1:07? 7:40?

Is it so the broadcasters have time to give the intro and lineups? If so, why do the times vary from five minutes, to seven minutes, to ten minutes, to fifteen minutes past the half hour? Are some broadcast teams slower than others? Are there more commercials for some markets before the first pitch? And what's with the Canadians starting games at 1:07 and 7:07? Does it have to do with the the metric system when baseball is played there? Does baseball want to give people an extra few minutes to get to their seats at the ballpark, figuring most normal people schedule things on the half hour, like say 7:00 or 1:00?

While this is really of no importance, it's just something I have always wondered about. You may now resume your normal life. And no you can't have the last two minutes of your life back. Our next post will probably be at 6:13 pm sharp!

I'm confused by Maurice Clarett

I'm sure I am not the only only who is confused by Mo Clarett (like his lawyers), but this press release from the imaginary Mahoning Valley Thunder of the Eastern Indoor Football League confuses me even more.

One of the tri-owners of the Mahoning Valley Thunder, Michael Slyk, confirmed that they did indeed meet with former Warren G. Harding star Maurice Clarett and spoke about a contract.

‘‘We met with him at his request — at the request of an intermediary party,’’ Slyk said. ‘‘At the conclusion we decided that it was not in our best interest and not in his best interest (to sign).’’

The Thunder, an ArenaFootball2 team, plays in a predominantly passing league where quarterbacks and receivers are the main play makers. Slyk said the Thunder and Clarett agreed that the style of play in the league wasn’t conducive to his style of play.

‘‘It’s not a right fit for him or for us,’’ Slyk said. ‘‘This is a passing game. He’s a running back.’’

Clarett also said the Mahoning Valley HitMen of the expansion Eastern Indoor Football League offered him more money.

The Thunder is bound by league rules to pay each player on its team $200 per game plus a $50 bonus for each victory.

‘‘We made that clear to him right off the bat,’’ Slyk said. ‘‘The league controls it and they control it for a specific reason — so we don’t end up like the NFL with a bidding war.

‘‘We want to remain a league of development for players to move up to the AFL and for modest markets. If players keep asking for more money, that doesn’t fit into our market.’’

OK, so they didn't sign Clarett because (1) it's a passing league and he is a running back and (2) the Mahoning Valley Hitmen offered him more money. Like what, two-fitty a game and free socks? Perhaps you just didn't want the headache, no?

(By the way, when you have imaginary teams, can't you find a different place for your team to be from? I mean isn't there a city you can subsitute for "Mahoning Valley" for your squad since that's already taken by the prestigious AFL2 team?)

But really, does it matter? The league still has four "teams" and Clarett is about due to go to jail anyway.

And actually, there are only three EIFL teams listed on the league site so they are getting really close to starting up, I'd guess. Two-days will be going any day now.

Clarett himself seemed pretty fired up for the season to get started.

Man sues Mashburn over golf mishap

A man who claims he was injured by an errant golf ball hit by former Miami Heat player Jamal Mashburn on a Miami Beach golf course in 2004 has sued the retired player for damages.

File this one under, "huh?" I am sure there is no alterior motive here other than that the man was seriously injured. The fact that Jamal Mashburn has millions in the bank is sheer coincidence. Read on...

The lawsuit was filed Monday in Miami-Dade Circuit Court and seeks an excess of $15,000 in damages.

I'm sorry...did you say $15,000? As in fifteen thousand? Wow, this guy must be more honest than about 90% of the population. Admit it, dear reader, you'd have thrown in some "pain and suffering" wouldn't you?

Crance and Mashburn, who retired from the NBA after an injury last year, were both playing golf at the upscale LaGorce Country Club in March 2005. Crance was teeing off on the 17th hole when Mashburn hit a shot off the 18th hole that struck him in the eye, the lawsuit said.

Mashburn didn't yell "fore" when he hit the stray ball and failed "to give any warning whatsoever," the lawsuit said.

"He's permanently lost vision in one eye because of a detached retina," Koltun said.

Again...$15,000?! Dude has a detached retina from getting hit in the head by a golf ball from a player worth millions and he is suing for $15 grr? Wow. Who is representing this guy, Vinny Gambini?

Team plans cemetery for die-hard fans

A German soccer club plans to open a cemetery next to its stadium so that die-hard fans can rest in peace alongside their favorite team.

Hamburg SV, a Bundesliga side from the northern port city, aims to open the graveyard some 50 feet from the stadium's main entrance, said deputy chairman Christian Reichert.

Why didn't the Expos ever think of that? Think of the attraction for tourists! So, why would people want to be buried near their team's stadium and how will it be presented?

"For a large number of people, it's important to be close to the club after their lives are over," he said. "The cemetery will have the look of a small, open stadium."

Very classy. Surely this has been tried before, no?

"I don't know of any other place in Germany where this is done, so it's a unique opportunity for our fans," Reichert said, adding that teams like England's Everton FC have been known to inter fans' ashes around playing fields.

No way this idea would be considered a bad idea by anyone though right?

Not everyone is happy about the cemetery though.

"Some people, especially from churches, have said that it's not appropriate," Reichert said. "It's not for everyone but a lot of people are interested. Even if only one percent of our members take a place, that would be enough."

I was looking at the photo of Yahoo! Sports killshot on the wife of Tiger Woods (see post several below this one) and I couldn't help but notice how she seems to have put on a few poundages and is not quite the sexy vixen she was when she married him.

This is not uncommon as I know like a trillion guys to whom this has happened, many not famous.

Whoops, wrong jockeys.

Jockey Paul O'Neill was facing a short ban from race-riding last night after it emerged that he had head-butted a horse at Stratford on Sunday.

OK, first off, NO it was not former Yankees outfielder Paul O'Neill that did this.

The 26-year-old, riding City Affair for the first time, was thrown as they arrived at the start for a two-mile selling hurdle.

OK, what the hell is a selling hurdle?

Having landed on his feet in front of the horse, O'Neill appeared to drop his crash-helmeted forehead on to his erstwhile mount's nose.

Erstwhile? Who is writing this? Must be a full-of-himself-Brit.

The pair were reunited for the race and finished fourth.

Phew...Glad they were able to sort things out.

Tyler Bennett of Colts Neck claims he suffered emotional distress because his genitals were partly visible in a basketball game picture in his 2001 school yearbook.

He is suing the school board and nine former students.

The offending photograph, taken from a low angle, showed Bennett shooting a basket on a day he wore boxer shorts instead of an athletic supporter.

I'd be more concerned with exactly who was taking the photo. Was it a hot chick, or was it the weird guy in history class?

Seniors were told to return their yearbooks, and the offending picture was cut out in every copy that was subsequently distributed.

Yeah, that fixed everything, I'm sure. Once the books were returned I am sure no one said anything.

Bennett stayed home for the last few days of school and when he returned in September he was subject to constant teasing, in one case by a teacher, in another by a player on a rival basketball team.

Dude played this all wrong. He should have bragging his ass off and getting some trim out of this. I mean he got to show his meat to all the honeys without getting in trouble didn't he? And this was in 2001? Dude...get over it.
